SPOCK

Like Sophie, Spock was also born in captivity, in Norman, Oklahoma and sold to The University of Montreal to be raised as a human child.

With no chimpanzee mother of his own, he had to trust a human mother. He grew very close to other chimpanzee children in his human and un- natural environment.

As usual with this kind of cross fostering experiment, his fate included eventual separation from the humans he grew to love and know when the research ended.

Then, sent to a zoo, he lived “ on exhibit” as part of the “animal collection” for the next 25 years until his rescue by Fauna.

Date of birth: February 9, 1976

Personality: This guy is a real darling.  Spock is kind, sensitive, gentle, loyal and considerate. It would be hard not to like him. He loves women, and now at Fauna is beginning to accept the friendship of men, (we were told that while at the zoo he was not too fond of most men).He can still become anxious if there are too many men walking past his area. In fact, the only things that really upset him seem to be too many people near his enclosure  and the loud noise of the pressure washer on cleaning day.

Otherwise he is usually funny and fun to be with. Given how very polite, sweet, and loving he is, he is easy to spend time with. One of his most endearing qualities is his loyalty to and love for Sophie. It is the kind of unconditional love we all wish for in our lives.

In spite of the stress of zoo life with the challenge it creates for male chimpanzees to meet strangers every day, he has a loving and easy character.  The fact that he has had to live in harmony with two pretty strong women, Sophie and Maya, would be difficult for most male chimpanzees. But a guy like Spock just seems to want to always keep the peace and is very good with the girls.

Favorite Activities: Socializing with other chimpanzees seems to be quite important to Spock including games of chase with his human friends. He loves to groom anyone. You can often find him sitting near the caging interacting with a chimpanzee friend on the other side, grooming someone’s arm, back or fingers. He loves to drink from the hose, a favorite of so many chimpanzees. We are looking forward to his first summer on the islands since he loves to be outside and to watch what is going on around the chimp house.

Favorite Foods: Apples, bananas and grapes are his top favorites for sure. Fruit salad with soy yogurt and any and all cooked foods are often his choices. Like Sophie, he loves foods a human might choose to eat, including pasta, baked apples with oatmeal, vegetarian soups and rice and beans. Spock is a pleasure to serve, since he will try anything, and is such a gentleman about everything.

He gets very excited and savors all his meals. He too uses a fork or spoon to eat whatever he gets in a bowl that we would use a utensil for. He is fond of raw carrots, but otherwise prefers his veggies cooked.

He loves his night time packages with dried fruits, nuts or seeds. He also has fun with all the special treats that chimps in captivity enjoy like licorice or lollipops, granola bars, muffins, and other fun snacks. Oh, and we can’t forget to mention his loud food grunts of pleasure over smoothies and orange juice.
